Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea or sleep apnoea(British) is a condition where a person has pauses in breathing during sleep with one or more actual breaths being skipped. Anything over 10 seconds is considred clinical sleep apnea.
The problem with sleep apnea is many people do not know they suffer from it and may suffer from the condition for years before realizing it. in fact most people become aware of their condition from a loved on witnessing the lasp of breath during sleep.
The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This most often means that the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. The blockage may cause shallow breathing or breathing pauses.
Central sleep apnea is a less common type of sleep apnea. It happens when the area of your brain that controls your breathing doesn’t send the correct signals to your breathing muscles. You make no effort to breathe for brief periods.
Untreated sleep apnea not only causes snoring but can also cause a myriad of other health issues, so treatment is very important.
